COACH STEVE DRAKE'S FAVORITES

People often ask me:

"Coach, who influenced your life the most?"

After more than forty years of coaching, studying leadership, serving my country, and building businesses, I've learned that success leaves clues.

These six individuals helped shape the philosophy behind Earned. Not Given.

JOHN WOODEN

John Wooden taught me that character matters more than championships.

His Pyramid of Success remains one of the greatest leadership models ever created.

He believed:

"Success is peace of mind."

John Wooden taught me that who you become matters more than what you accomplish.

KOBE BRYANT

Kobe Bryant taught me that discipline is a competitive advantage.

The world saw championships.

I saw the early mornings.

I saw the preparation.

I saw a man who understood that greatness isn't an event.

It's a lifestyle.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT

Roosevelt taught me to embrace the arena.

His famous words continue to inspire me:

"The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena."

Life rewards those willing to step forward, accept responsibility, and take risks.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Lincoln taught me resilience.

Few people have experienced more setbacks and continued to lead with humility.

He reminds me that leadership isn't about popularity.

It's about doing what is right when it is difficult.

DICK WINTERS

Major Dick Winters taught me that great leaders serve first.

He led from the front.

He remained calm under pressure.

He never asked his men to do something he wouldn't do himself.

Leadership begins with service.

PAT SUMMITT

Pat Summitt taught me accountability.

She demanded excellence because she believed people were capable of more.

Her leadership philosophy continues to influence coaches around the world.

She understood something many people forget:

Discipline is an act of love.

WHY THESE SIX?

Because they all understood the same truth:

  • Character matters.

  • Discipline wins.

  • Leadership serves.

  • Pressure reveals preparation.

  • Greatness is earned.

These aren't simply my favorite leaders.

They're reminders of the person I'm still trying to become.
